Basic Off-Roading Equipment

As a teaching club, one of our responsibilities is to make sure that everyone that goes out on a run returns from the trail and gets back on the road safely.  We are always open to helping others in need.  This will especially include all the new club member that are new jeep owners or those that do not have the proper gear to get them on the trail and back on the road.

GMRS Radios

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed radio service that uses channels around 462 MHz and 467 MHz. The most common use of GMRS channels is for short-distance, two-way voice communications using hand-held radios, mobile radios and repeater systems.

Services that provide functionality similar to GMRS include the Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS), the Family Radio Service (FRS) and the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS).

Desert Wranglers now uses GMRS radios to communicate on trail runs. This is one of the most basic and important pieces of equipment to have in order to stay in touch with other run participants.

Example radios can be found on Amazon here.

Tire Deflators

Tire deflators come in various shapes and sizes. Each different kind has the same basic function, they allow drivers to quickly and accurately deflate or 'air-down' their tires when going off road to achieve enhanced grip and traction in various terrain.

Depending on the model you purchase, they will either alert you in some fashion when an approximate setting is reached, or stop deflating all together at a certain setting.

Example tire deflators can be found on Amazon here.

Air Compressor

An air compressor is arguably the most important purchase every off-roader will make. They are extremely useful tools, not just to inflate your tires following the run, but can also be used for tools and even some versions of lockers depending on the model of compressor.

Just like everything else, air compressors come in a wide range of choices. Always pay attention to the cfm (Cubic Feet / Minute) and how it is powered. Battery powered units are great for quick little bursts but lack longevity, and you might find that a lighter plug version has much less power then one that connects to the battery directly. The connections and gauges it comes with are also important for versatility and accuracy. It really boils down to your needs and personal preference.

Example air compressor can be found on Amazon here.

Four Way Tire Inflation Hose

Not a necessary item but definitely helps move things along much faster when done with a run!

Example four way tire inflation hose can be found on Amazon here.
